Dorothy Heidbuurt

I graduated from Yorkville University with a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology and I am a Registered Psychotherapist through the College of Registered Psychotherapies of Ontario. I use a variety of modalities including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness. Through the aid of these modalities strategies to manage anxiety, depression, anger, interpersonal interactions, relationships, work stressors and trauma, just to name a few are worked on. I can also help you identify thought patterns, and underlying beliefs or schemas that could be contributing to your difficulties in coping with life, work or relationship stressors. I have specific expertise in helping those who have had brain injuries as I have been working in this field for 20+ years. My expertise includes both individual and group psychotherapy and encompasses all levels of complexity. My greatest passion is helping others achieve their greatest potential to improve their quality of life.

Besides counselling I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I enjoy going for walks and admiring nature. I also enjoy the hobby of scrapbooking my pictures (not digitally). In addition to this I continue to further develop my skills by learning more about various counselling strategies.

Mission and Values

I believe that all people no matter their age, race, gender, sexuality, religion, ability/disability, economic status all deserve the same treatment and a chance to have the best quality of life possible. My mission is to provide the best (to my abilities) counselling services to all my clients.

When working with my clients the values that are important to me are respect, empathy, genuine, caring, inclusive, person-centered, confidentiality, and collaboration. Please note that there are limits to confidentiality when there is a danger or safety concern to any person.
